Anti-Harassment & Code of Conduct Policy
The Denver Bachata Festival is dedicated to creating a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for everyone, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, religion, ability, body type, dance level, or any other personal characteristic. We believe Bachata should be joyful, respectful, and welcoming to all.
Our Commitment
We take all concerns seriously and respond with compassion and fairness. Together, we can make the Denver Bachata Festival a space where the love of dance is shared in safety and joy.
1. Scope
This policy applies to all attendees, instructors, performers, DJs, volunteers, staff, and venue partners at:
- All festival venues and associated spaces
- Workshops, social dances, afterparties, and outdoor events
- Online spaces connected to the festival (social media, group chats, etc.)
2. Definition of Harassment
Harassment includes (but is not limited to):
- Unwanted physical contact — touching or holding without consent
- Sexual or suggestive remarks — jokes, comments, or invitations that make someone uncomfortable
- Non-verbal misconduct — staring, blocking pathways, following, or gestures of a sexual nature
- Persistent requests after a “no” or disinterest has been expressed
- Online or written harassment in event-related spaces
- Hate speech or discrimination based on protected characteristics
3. Dance Etiquette & Consent
- Always ask before close or intimate dance positions
- Respect a “no” — no explanation is required
- Avoid forcing moves that could cause discomfort or injury
- Practice good hygiene and respect personal boundaries at all times
4. Reporting
If you experience or witness harassment:
1. Tell the person to stop if you feel safe doing so
2. Report to a designated festival safety team member (look for staff badges or color wristbands) or email DBFSafeTeam@gmail.com.
3. We’ll listen, take it seriously, and act fast.
5. Consequences
The festival may take any action deemed appropriate, including:
- Verbal warning
- Removal from the event without refund
- Involving venue security or law enforcement
